Zelenskyy: China tries to thwart Peace Summit

China is urging several countries not to participate in the Peace Summit on June 15-16 in Switzerland, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated at the Shangri-La Dialogue on Asian Security in Singapore.

“You can skip the peace summit…, you can refrain from helping Ukraine, the civilized world, to end the war, but to sabotage the peace summit, take steps to ensure that the weakening equals the presence of leaders, the presence of countries, to do everything so that some leaders do not get to the peace summit, to pressure them – this definitely does not bring peace,” Zelenskyy said.

Thus, China supports the war and is “an instrument in the hands of Putin,” the president said. “And this is not only support for Russia, but actually support for war. Because if you do not support the Peace Summit, then what is happening is normal for you,” Zelenskyy emphasized.

China’s foreign policy does not correspond to the principles that Beijing declares. “There is something wrong here – to say that we are based on supporting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine and at the same time support a country that violates all the principles and provisions of the UN Charter, the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine,” the President said.

Zelenskyy emphasized that 106 states have already confirmed their participation in the Peace Summit, and 70-75 will be represented at the level of heads of state.

Earlier, Vitaly Portnikov, a renowned Ukrainian journalist and the Shevchenko Prize recepient, said that Russia and China are not so much trying to disrupt the Peace Summit in Switzerland this June as they are attempting to change its agenda, demonstrate that alternative peace plans exist, and reduce the idea of ending the war to a mere ceasefire.
