MEDIA RELEASE

X World Congress of Ukrainians scheduled for 20-22 August in Lviv

The X Ukrainian World Congress will take place on 20-22 August 2013 at the Lviv Polytechnic National University under this year’s Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) motto “Contra spem spero”. These words, penned by renowned Ukrainian poet Lesia Ukrainka, symbolize the faith of the 20-million strong diaspora in Ukraine’s better future despite the many challenges that lie ahead.

Delegates representing UWC member organizations active in 33 countries and representatives of the 14 countries in which the UWC has ties will participate in the work of the X Ukrainian World Congress, together with interested Ukrainians from both Ukraine and the diaspora.

The X Ukrainian World Congress is dedicated to the memory of the victims of the 1932-33 Holodomor on the 80th anniversary of this genocide. On 20 August 2013, following the first plenary session, a commemorative ceremony paying tribute to the millions of lives lost during the Holodomor will take place at the city’s Taras Shevchenko monument. Immediately following this ceremony, the official opening of the X Ukrainian World Congress will be held at the Solomiya Krushelnytska Lviv National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet.

Over the course of three days, delegates will have an opportunity to review the work of the UWC for the period 2008-2013. They will also discuss current issues relevant to the Ukrainian community, including “Ukraine’s Euro-integration”, “The global Ukrainian community” and “80th anniversary of the Holodomor”, and develop an action plan to guide the activities of the UWC for the next 5-year term. On the final day, 22 August 2013, delegates will elect a new UWC Board.

The X Ukrainian World Congress is being organized in Lviv with the assistance of the Lviv Polytechnic National University and its International Institute of Education, Culture and Diaspora Relations, and the Lviv Municipal Administration.

Detailed information on the X Ukrainian World Congress is available on the UWC web site.
