World Day Against Trafficking: WFUWO launches information campaign

The World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations (WFUWO) is launching a campaign for World Day Against Trafficking in Persons on July 30.

“We call on member organizations and supporters of WFUWO this summer to conduct a joint information campaign to draw attention to the problem of human trafficking and to protect Ukrainian citizens from falling into modern forms of slavery,” wrote WFUWO.

WFUWO proposes the following actions:

• On World Day Against Trafficking in Persons (July 30), post current information about human trafficking in Ukraine and in the respective country where the member/supporter organization is located on your online resources, share the  “Trap: Don’t Become Human Merchandise” video and provide information about organizations that offer assistance in cases of human trafficking in various countries.
• On International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition (August 23), share the video “Markers of Modern Slavery” with information about anti-trafficking laws that protect individuals in the respective countries and hotlines.

If your organization lacks established contacts with anti-trafficking organizations in your country, you can find relevant information through networks of non-governmental organizations globally, the International Organization for Migration Office, or your local municipality, as advised by WFUWO.

The main goal of World Day Against Trafficking in Persons is to raise public awareness about modern slavery, highlight the plight of victims, and encourage active participation in combating this crime.

“Since Ukraine regained independence in 1991, about 300,000 Ukrainians have become victims of human trafficking. This human rights violation has gained new relevance and scale in the context of Russia’s full-scale attack on Ukraine, as millions of Ukrainians, especially women and children, have found themselves in danger and vulnerable situations, forced to flee their homes in search of safe refuge abroad,” WFUWO emphasizes.

“We hope that together we can spread this important information and protect Ukrainians from falling into the trap of human trafficking and help,” the organizers wrote.
