WFUWO offers free lecture on systemic destruction of Ukrainian language

The World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations (WFUWO) invites you to an online lecture titled “Linguicide: How the Ukrainian Language Was Forced to Be Silent,” in observance of Ukrainian Language Day, which is observed on Feb. 21.

The lecture will take place on March 16 at 11 a.m. Kyiv time online, and you can join via the provided link.

The event will explore how the Ukrainian language managed to survive despite 400 years of bans, and whether the language policies of the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union, and Russia were different.

Speakers will also discuss how language shapes national identity and what else, beyond language, is essential for preserving cultural heritage.

Valentyna Merzhyievska, co-founder of the specialized curriculum school BerkoShko, host of the PereFarbovanyi Lys podcast, and creator of educational projects such as Chasoliniia, Linhvotsyd, and Kalendatyka, will be joining the conversation.

This lecture will be valuable for those transitioning to Ukrainian or supporting loved ones in doing so, teachers instilling a love for the language in their students, and parents raising children in a Ukrainian-speaking environment, according to the organizers.
