The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) is actively recruiting the position of Executive Director to represent and lead its global mission to support Ukrainians inside and outside of the Ukraine.  Russia’s war has rapidly expanded the role, mission and strategic opportunities for the UWC to make a global difference.  In turn, the organization itself has also come to a pivotal point of required growth and evolution so to meet the demands of the expanded mission.  

Reporting to the President, the Executive Director will be instrumental in delivering upon front-line war needs, representing the best interests of diaspora globally and managing professional staff and volunteer-led committees across multiple time zones.  This highly networked and influential position requires a dynamic and highly motivated leader with international experience to lead strategically and operationally.  This position, in return, offers an unprecedented career opportunity for professional and personal growth.

Roles and responsibilities 

  • Build and manage a strong stable operational framework to lead and carry out the mission and vision of the UWC in accordance with the strategic direction of the Board of Directors 
  • Advance UWC’s positions to all stakeholders around the world, including civil society, governments and donors. 
  • Develop and execute the work plans and programming established in cooperation with the Board and its committees. 
  • Build, sustain and strengthen Board functions including meetings, policy compliance and committee work. 
  • Provide “hands-on” financial management and oversight to ensure compliance and accountability of budget, cash flow, income statements, expense and tax filings toward fully funded daily operations and overall UWC viability. 
  • Manage/oversee Human Resource policies and functions including onboarding, recruitment, retention, management, development, DEI and legislative compliance/reporting. 
  • Lead and build a high-performance team culture by scaling existing or building new formal processes and practices for best organization results, efficiencies and effectiveness.  
  • Ensure the organization’s functional excellence through sound and up-to-date policies; safe working conditions, payroll and payments are met; technology, hardware and software tools are available relevant to job requirements/employee needs; records management, legislative compliance requirements, internal communication and annual planning programs and budgetary activities occur to support annual deliverables and strategic goals set by the Board. 
  • Develop and maintain external alliances, donors, community networks and strategic partnerships with regular communication, public activities, influential dialogue and education. 
  • Lead a global team of professionals, including UWC head office in Toronto and Missions in Kyiv, New York & Brussels.  Support the work of UWC Foundations in Canada, US & Ukraine. 

Qualifications: 

  • Demonstrated skills in managing staff, boards, committees and volunteers on a national and international scale.  
  • Solid understanding of Ukrainian communities around the world, geopolitics, international organizations & the current situation in Ukraine. 
  • Strong operational, financial, human resource and board management capabilities with demonstrated results for organization effectiveness, change management and transformation. 
  • Policy development in cooperation with key stakeholders. 
  • Considerable experience in managing organizational relationships, community development, fundraising and communication to diverse audiences, including government advocacy. 
  • Diplomatic competency as a “statesperson” with prowess for communicating and creating followership supporting the greater mission/cause. 
  • Organization passion and reputational leadership for progress and achievement. 
  • Written and spoken mastery of Ukrainian and English languages including track record for public speaking. 
  • Direct Experience and accountability for not-for-profit governance and risk management  
  • Post secondary education, minimum of 5 years in not-for-profit executive leadership position of standing and a willingness to travel internationally, including Ukraine.  

Location: Toronto, Canada with remote as a possibility.  

Remuneration: $140,000 to $150,000 plus the potential for performance bonus .
