Ukrainian authorities must develop a clearer and more comprehensive strategy for engaging with Ukrainians abroad, a process that is still in its early stages, says Andriy Shevchenko, head of the UWC Mission to Ukraine.
“For the first time since gaining independence, Ukraine is systematically working to strengthen ties with Ukrainians living abroad, and this is certainly a positive step,” Shevchenko said in an interview with public broadcaster Suspilne.
He emphasizes that it’s crucial to set realistic goals when shaping this strategy.
“While the idea of bringing back all Ukrainians displaced by the war seems utopian, maintaining connections with them and helping preserve their identity is a tangible and achievable goal,” he added.
Earlier, UWC President Paul Grod stated that the draft law on multiple citizenship would help slow the assimilation of Ukrainians abroad and preserve their connection to Ukraine.
