UWC Vice President on Milei-Zelenskyy meeting: Argentina must reclaim regional leadership

Argentina must reclaim its leadership role in the South American region, and its position on Russia’s war against Ukraine could play a crucial role in countering Kremlin propaganda.

This was highlighted by Jorge Danylyshyn, UWC Regional Vice President for South America and President of the Prosvita Ukrainian Cultural Society, as he commented on the meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his Argentinian counterpart Javier Milei on Jan. 22 at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos..

“Anyone who can contribute to achieving a just peace in Ukraine is invaluable. The ‘Russian world’ consistently seeks to spread false narratives and scenarios in the region. In this context, President Milei’s voice could serve as a vital impediment to these disinformation efforts,” Danylyshyn said.

The meeting between Zelenskyy and Milei marked a step forward in strengthening ties between two nations facing significant challenges.

“Ukraine is striving for a just peace and rebuilding its future, while Argentina seeks economic stabilization and sustainable development,” Danylyshyn said.

Argentina, he added, must overcome its prolonged economic crises and, with Milei’s leadership, reclaim its role as a regional powerhouse.

“The world is overwhelmed by fears and uncertainties – wars, the climate crisis, economic and social imbalances. These challenges demand strong political leadership capable of offering actionable solutions to navigate through these crises,” Danylyshyn said.

Zelenskyy and Milei met during the WEF in Switzerland, where they discussed coordination to achieve “a just and lasting peace,” according to the Ukrainian president.

Ukraine values Argentina’s willingness to help and its deep understanding of the situation, Zelenskyy said. 

“You are a very welcome guest in Ukraine. I invite you to meet the Ukrainian people, they love you very much. I want you to see with your own eyes how Ukrainians are fighting and what they are going through during this war. And I really want Ukrainians to feel how much you respect them,” Zelenskyy added.
