UWC urges global action to protect Georgia’s freedom

The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) is deeply concerned about the rapid decline of democracy and the rule of law in Georgia under the Georgian Dream party. This authoritarian shift threatens to undo decades of progress toward democracy and European integration, undermining the sacrifices made by the Georgian people for their freedom and sovereignty.

We call on the international democratic community to recognize the broader geopolitical stakes of this Russia-orchestrated crisis and respond decisively with targeted measures, including sanctions and diplomatic pressure on the Georgian government.

“The Georgian people have shown incredible bravery in their fight for freedom and democracy,” said UWC President Paul Grod. “Their struggle is our struggle. We stand united against the oppressive tactics of the Moscow-led authoritarian coalition. Democratic nations must support the Georgian people in their quest for justice and democracy.”

Recent events in Georgia, such as fraudulent elections, the seizure of state institutions, suppression of civil society, and violent repression of peaceful protesters, mirror the tactics used by the Moscow-backed Yanukovych regime in Ukraine from 2013 to 2014. This is a classic Russian authoritarian playbook designed to subjugate nations aspiring to European values and freedoms.

The situation in Georgia is a stark reminder of Russia’s ongoing efforts to destabilize neighboring countries and undermine a united and democratic Europe.

The UWC calls on Ukrainian communities worldwide to support the Georgian diaspora during this critical time. We urge all freedom-loving people to join peaceful demonstrations, amplify the voices of Georgian protesters, and advocate for international action to protect democracy in Georgia. As Ukraine fights its own existential war, we understand the vital importance of global unity against the rising authoritarian threat inspired by Russia’s attack on the rules-based international order.

The democratic world must not stand by as freedom is stolen.
