AND ATTENDS RECEPTION HONOURING HIM WITH THE SHEVCHENKO MEDAL

On October 14, 2011, Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) President Eugene Czolij joined a Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) delegation which met in Toronto with the Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper. The meeting preceeded a banquet during which the Prime Minister was awarded the UCC’s highest honour – the Taras Shevchenko Medal.

Members of the UCC delegation included National President Paul Grod, National Advisory Council Chair James Temerty, and Executive Director Taras Zalusky. The participants discussed a range of issues relating to Ukraine.

During the banquet, UCC President Paul Grod presented Prime Minister Harper with the Shevchenko Medal, highlighting his significant contribution to the development of the Ukrainian community in Canada and his support for various issues of concern to the Ukrainian community, including the Parliament of Canada’s recognition of the 1932-33 Holodomor as a genocide of the Ukrainian nation, and the defence of human rights and democratic development in Ukraine.

The Prime Minister of Canada expressed his gratitude for the award and focused his remarks on the Ukrainian community’s important contribution to the development of Canada. He also stated that the Ukrainian people can count on Canada to stand up for their liberty.
