UWC President joins UGCC Synod of Bishops for first time

Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) President Paul Grod participated for the first time in the sessions of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church’s (UGCC) governing body – the Permanent Synod.

Also known as the Synod of Bishops, it’s responsible for leading and making crucial decisions for the Church.

The historic event took place in Toronto on Feb. 26, as noted by His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk, who heads the UGCC, according to the Church’s press service.

Foremostly, Grod conveyed to the bishops the challenges and difficulties Ukrainians around the world face due to Russia’s war against Ukraine.

“Despite these hardships, they continue to bring to the world the truth about the suffering of the Ukrainian people and the reasons behind this modern, colonial war,” the statement reads.

President Grod also addressed the issue of integration facing the Ukrainian diaspora. He highlighted the importance of maintaining Ukrainian identity, language, and culture in their countries of residence.

“The UWC like the UGCC, is committed to the integration of every Ukrainian into their chosen environment. However, it also urges them to remember their roots and origins,” the statement said.

Another area where the Church can play a significant role is fostering communication and coexistence between different generations and waves of emigration, Grod said.

“After all, they come together during shared prayer in the church, forming a united parish community,” the UGCC said.

Meanwhile, the synod’s bishops shared updates on the situation of Ukrainian migrants and refugees in the countries where they serve – the U.S., Germany, Poland, Canada, and Ukraine.

They stressed the urgent need to raise a conscious Ukrainian diaspora abroad and the crucial role of the Church in this process.

“The Church must be the heart of the Ukrainian community,” His Beatitude Sviatoslav said.

Both sides expressed a readiness to cooperate while respecting their distinct nature and missions.
