On 13-14 October 2018, Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) President Eugene Czolij, on the invitation of the International Ukrainian Organization “Fourth Wave” led by Dr. Iryna Jastreb, fulfilled a visit to Germany where he delivered an address on the Holodomor during an academic conference in Düsseldorf and attended the parish feast of the Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Krefeld-Traar.
On 13 October 2018, during the academic conference titled “Unknown European History. The 85th Anniversary of the Holodomor of 1932-1933”, the UWC President highlighted that the Holodomor was a genocide of the Ukrainian people, and called upon Germany to officially recognize this historical fact, as previously done by 17 countries.
Opening remarks during the academic conference were delivered by Dr. Iryna Jastreb, the event’s main organizer.
Various aspects of the Holodomor were featured in presentations by: Dr. Gerhard Simon, Dr. Olesia Stasiuk, Dr. Arsen Zinchenko, Dr. Vasil Marochko, Dr. Valentyna Borysenko and Dr. Dmytro Zlepko.
Following the presentations, conference participants adopted an appeal to the Chancellor of Germany to recognize the Holodomor of 1932-33 as genocide of the Ukrainian people, and viewed the exhibit “Executed by Famine: Unknown Genocide of Ukrainians in 1932-1933”.
On 14 October 2018, Eugene Czolij attended Divine Liturgy in the framework of the parish feast of the Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Krefeld-Traar, celebrated by Fr. Volodymyr Soroka. The UWC President joined the holiday program during which he extended greetings to the parishioners and called upon the Ukrainian community to actively support Ukraine in the defence of its territorial integrity and with continued reforms.
During his visit, UWC President Eugene Czolij was accompanied by President of the International Ukrainian Organization “Fourth Wave” Dr. Iryna Jastreb and Director of the UWC Mission to International Organizations in Brussels Maryna Iaroshevych.
“The Ukrainian World Congress stands in solidarity with Ukrainian communities of the world in honouring the memory of the victims of the Holodomor of 1932-33 and achieving its recognition as genocide of the Ukrainian people,” – stated UWC President Eugene Czolij.
