UWC PRESIDENT ATTENDS COUNCIL OF UKRAINIAN CREDIT UNIONS OF CANADA AGM
The President of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) Eugene Czolij took part in the Annual General Meeting of the Council of Ukrainian Credit Unions of Canada (CUCUC) in Edmonton on November 4, 2010. Twenty delegates from six credit unions attended the AGM, joined by guests from Ukraine and Canada, including the former Manager of the Canadian “Ukraine Credit Union Strengthening Project” Bohdan Kozy, that program’s former Director Iryna Drahomyretska, former CUCUC President Yaroslav Skrypnyk and the President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress Paul Grod.
Created in 1971, CUCUC coordinates the activities of Ukrainian credit unions across Canada and works toward the renewal and development of the credit-cooperative movement in Ukraine. Its member institutions form the financial and economic backbone of the Ukrainian Canadian community and its organizational life.
The UWC President addressed the gathering and provided a brief overview of UWC’s activities in the past year. He wished CUCUC, under the leadership of President Olha Sheweli, continued success in its activities, particularly those aimed at mobilizing public opinion in support of independent Ukraine’s statehood and spiritual development, protection of human and national rights of Ukrainians and the development of Ukrainian community life throughout the world. The UWC President expressed his sincere gratitude to Ukrainian credit unions for understanding the importance of supporting UWC as the international coordinating body of Ukrainian communities in the Diaspora and providing financial support that enables UWC to perform its assigned tasks.
During the meeting, participants listened to reports covering the last year of activities from Iryna Drahomyretska who spoke about credit unions in Ukraine, Bohdan Leshchyshen about Ukrainian credit unions in Canada and Honorary CUCUC President Olha Zawerucha-Swyntuch about the Canadian “Ukraine Credit Union Strengthening Project” that has been recognized in Canada as one the best and most effective programs of its kind. A documentary film about credit unions in Canada was screened during the AGM. Bohdan Kozy and Iryna Drahomyretska were awarded honorary diplomas in recognition of their contributions to the development of the cooperative movement in Ukraine.
