On this Europe Day, May 9, 2024, the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC), along with the multimillion-strong Ukrainian diaspora, stands united with the nations of the European Union and Ukraine in commemorating a celebration of peace and unity across Europe. This day marks a significant moment for Ukraine, as it echoes the country’s ongoing commitment to the European values of freedom, justice, and dignity.
In 2023, under the leadership of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine took a historic step by officially celebrating Europe Day, replacing the discredited Soviet-era “Victory Day”. This move not only symbolizes a stride towards historical justice but also fortifies the ties between Ukraine and the Euro-Atlantic community—a family of nations to which Ukraine inherently belongs.
The UWC expresses profound gratitude to President Charles Michel of the European Council, President Ursula von der Leyen of the European Commission, and all the leaders and citizens of the EU for their relentless support. This support has been crucial as Ukraine continues to defend itself against Russia’s brutal military aggression, and it revitalizes the vision of a united Europe Whole and Free.
On December 14, 2023, the European Council’s decision to initiate accession negotiations highlighted the recognition of Ukraine’s efforts and its rightful place within the European framework. The Ukrainian World Congress now calls upon the EU to immediately begin these accession talks with Ukraine. Ukraine stands at the forefront of defending the fundamental values that have defined Europe since the Second World War. By integrating Ukraine into the EU, we can enhance the bloc’s capabilities, bolster its security, and strengthen its resilience against external threats.
The UWC also extends heartfelt thanks to the vibrant Ukrainian communities in the EU and the European Congress of Ukrainians for their tireless efforts in fostering collaboration between European nations and promoting Ukraine’s interests and integration into the EU.
As we move forward, the UWC, together with all supporters of a united Europe, is confident that together with the EU, Ukraine will emerge stronger and more resilient. We call on the European Council to immediate commence Ukraine accession negotiations to the EU and not wait until after the elections to the European Parliament, which adds significant political risk and harmful delays. Ukraine in Europe now is a crucial step towards a secure and prosperous future for all of Europe.
Together, we are stronger, together we will defeat evil.
