From 25 February to 11 March 2017, Oksana A. Wynnyckyj-Yusypovych, Chair of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) International Educational Coordinating Council (IECC) took part in the development of National Learning Standards for Ukraine. The two-week proceedings were attended by members of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine; representatives from various Regional Pedagogical Development Institutes; Lviv teachers and school principals, who for many years have implemented materials based on learner-centered education; members of the community organization The school without tears

Work on updating National Learning Standards for Ukraine was initiated by the Minister of Education and Sciences of Ukraine, Liliia Hrynevych, and her deputy, Pavlo Khobzey, within the conceptual parameters set out by the document The New Ukrainian School, announced by the Ministry of Education and Sciences on 27 October 2016. The proceedings were organized by Roman Shyyan, director of the Lviv Regional Pedagogical Development Institute (LRPDI). Sessions were held on the premises of the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) in Lviv, Ukraine.

25 years ago, in 1992, IECC founded the Institute for Teacher Professional Development (Nadia Luciw, director) whose members, in addition to sharing contemporary teaching methods, have worked with educators in Ukraine to implement systemic organizational techniques based on democratic principles, all the while understanding the need for personal learning and growth, when teaching in a changing world filled with disinformation. Since then, professional diaspora teachers have regularly contributed to courses, seminars and conferences in Ukraine and have welcomed educators from Ukraine into their schools in various parts of the world. The aim of such communication and interaction is to bring the teaching-learning process in the schools of Ukraine in line with the needs and demands of the 21st century.

“Recognizing all the benefits and challenges faced by professional teachers world-wide, I encourage diaspora teachers, who work within very diverse government funded educational systems around the world, to get involved and contribute to the advancement of The New Ukrainian School,” stated IECC Chair Oksana A. Wynnyckyj-Yusypovych, who was appointed Advisor to the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine on 26 October 2016.
