UWC expresses concern over actions against Georgian volunteer fighters

The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) is deeply concerned by the recent decision of the Georgian government to place approximately 300 Georgian Legion volunteer fighters on the wanted list. These volunteers have been steadfast allies in Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to defend its sovereignty and freedom against external aggression since 2014.

The UWC urges the Georgian authorities to reconsider this decision, which may inadvertently align with actions previously taken by Russian authorities. We call upon the European Union (EU) to engage in dialogue with the government in Tbilisi to address this issue and support the rights of these dedicated volunteers.

“This development is troubling and may signal a shift in Georgia’s political landscape. The Georgian Legion’s volunteer fighters have consistently shown remarkable bravery and commitment to the principles of democracy and freedom, both in Georgia and Ukraine. It is crucial for the EU to encourage Georgia to uphold the democratic values and further the European aspirations of its people,” stated UWC President Paul Grod.

On July 22, 2024, Georgia’s special services listed Georgian volunteer fighters as wanted individuals. These volunteers have played a significant role in defending Ukraine. Mamuka Mamulashvili, the commander of the Georgian Legion, has expressed concerns that this move could lead to their arrest at Russia’s behest. This action follows the designation of the Georgian Legion as a “terrorist organization” in June 2024. The Georgian government has accused the Legion members of involvement in an alleged coup attempt during protests against the ‘foreign agents’ law, which has been criticized for its potential impact on democratic freedoms. These actions have raised alarms about the state of democracy in Georgia among civil society and international partners.

“The bond between Ukrainians and Georgians remains strong. As a global Ukrainian community, we stand in solidarity with the Georgian people in their pursuit of democracy and Euro-Atlantic integration,” added Grod. “We extend our gratitude to the volunteer fighters of the Georgian Legion for their unwavering dedication to the cause of a free, sovereign, and independent Ukraine and Georgia.”
