UWC co-organizes speech by Ukrainian defender in Danish parliament

The Ukrainian World Congress co-organized a speech in Denmark’s legislature by Dmytro Kanuper, a Ukrainian defender who was recently freed from Russian captivity.

The initiative was part of UWC’s cooperation with the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War (CHTPW).

The Ukrainian Association in Denmark (UAD) staged the event with support from Hjælp Ukrainske Børn (Help Ukrainian Children) – a UAD’s member – and in cooperation with the Ukrainian Dialogues organization, said Lesia Ignatyk-Eriksen, who leads both organizations.

Kanuper addressed parliament during a public hearing marking the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine that started on Feb. 24, 2022.

His speech received a standing ovation.

Among those in attendance were the parliamentary speaker, lawmakers and parliamentary faction leaders, Denmark’s ministers of defense and foreign affairs, the chair of the Committee on International Cooperation, and Ukraine’s Ambassador to Denmark, Andrii Yanevskyi.

Kanuper, a defender of Mariupol and fighter with the Azov regiment, spent two-and-a-half years in Russian captivity before returning home in September.

He presented the Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs with a book featuring photographs and the names of his comrades still held in Russian captivity.

Danish Foreign Affairs Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen reaffirmed Denmark’s steadfast support for Ukraine.

It’s in fact pretty simple: if russians lay down the weapons, there will be no war, if Ukraine lays down weapons – there will be no Ukraine,” he said.

The event drew significant media attention, with 14 Ukrainian journalists attending the meeting with Kanuper.

In October 2024, the UWC officially began its cooperation with the CHTPW.
