PRESS RELEASE
UWC CALLS UPON UKRAINIAN GOVERNMENT AUTHORITIES TO ENSURE
THE ERECTION OF A MONUMENT IN HONOUR OF TARAS SHEVCHENKO
IN THE VINNYTSIA MAIN SQUARE
On February 8, 2012, the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) sent a letter to President Viktor Yanukovych with a copy to the mayor of Vinnytsia, Volodymyr Groysman, expressing concern about the obstacles to erecting a monument in the Vinnytsia main square in honour of a brilliant son of the Ukrainian nation, the great Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko.
The UWC made reference to the November 17, 2011 resolution of the Vinnytsia City Council administration which substituted the resolutions adopted in 2004 and 2010 regarding the erection of a Taras Shevchenko monument in the central Teatral’na Square with a number of provisions pertaining to public opinion on the issue of building this monument in any one of several other locations. This decision also resulted in the suspension of the previously announced competition for the design of the Taras Shevchenko monument in Teatral’na Square.
The UWC called upon Ukrainian government authorities to review these actions of the Vinnytsia City Council administration as quickly as possible and to ensure the erection of a monument in Vinnytsia’s Teatral’na Square worthy of the greatness of Taras Shevchenko whose 200th anniversary of birth will be marked in two years by Ukrainians worldwide.
