UWC calls upon international community to monitor
the actions of the governing authorities of Ukraine against NGO “Centre UA”
The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) calls upon the international community to monitor the actions of the governing authorities of Ukraine concerning NGO “Centre UA”, particularly the criminal proceedings launched against it and the questioning of its members.
The objectives of NGO “Centre UA” is to promote civic initiatives aimed at strengthening the influence of civil society on the government; to promote projects in various sectors, aimed at the development and preservation of democratic processes in Ukraine; to develop projects concerning European and Euro‑Atlantic integration of Ukraine; and to create a permanent discussion platform for representatives of civil society and government.
The actions of the governing authorities of Ukraine against NGO “Centre UA” follow repressions against the Ukrainian people over the last two months, such as the brutal beatings of peaceful protestors and journalists, unjustified imprisonment of EuroMaidan participants, adoption on 16 January 2014 of laws that severely restricted the freedom of speech and assembly, and threats against the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.
“The Ukrainian World Congress calls upon the governing authorities of Ukraine to cease pressuring civil society and rather concentrate their efforts on investigating the killings, torture, kidnapping s, repressions, attacks on and degradation of EuroMaidan supporters,” stated UWC President Eugene Czolij.
