Washington seeks to find a lasting peace to end the war in Ukraine so that a new one doesn’t flare up in a few years, said Marco Rubio, the new Secretary of State in the administration of President Donald Trump, writes CBS Mornings.
“We are going to engage in making it [Russia’s war against Ukraine – ed.] end in a way that is sustainable, meaning we don’t just want the conflict to [end] and then restart in two, three or four years down the road,” Rubio said.
Washington wants to “bring stability” he added.
“It’s a policy of the United States that we want it [the war] to end. We want to do everything we can to help it end,” he added.
Ukraine is not only facing high costs to restore and protect its energy infrastructure in the face of war, but is also paying a high price in human lives, and millions of people have had to flee their homes, Rubio said.
“[…] To its energy infrastructure, to the people, lives that were lost, to the millions of Ukrainian that have had to leave their country and are living overseas,” the U.S. Secretary of State said.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump on Jan. 22 called on Russia to “make a deal” to end the war in Ukraine. If the Kremlin refuses, the American leader promises to increase sanctions and tariffs against Moscow.
“I am going to do Russia, whose economy is falling, and President Putin, a very big favor. Settle now, and stop this ridiculous war! It’s only going to get worse,” Trump wrote on the Truth Social social network.
If Ukraine and Russia do not reach an agreement to end the war “soon,” Trump will have “no other choice but to put high levels of taxes, tariffs, and sanctions on anything being sold by Russia to the United States, and various other participating countries.”
“We can do it the easy way, or the hard way – and the easy way is always better. It’s time to ‘make a deal.’ No more lives must be lost!” Trump said.
