Ukrainians in Portugal shut down pro-Russian information platform

The Ukrainian community in Portugal, working with local investigative journalists, successfully shuttered a pro-Russian information platform, reported Pavlo Sadokha, UWC Vice-President and President of the Union of Ukrainians in Portugal (UUP).

“Another victory over Russian propaganda in Portugal,” Sadokha wrote.

The platform that spewed pro-Russian porpaganda, “Região de Águeda,” was a regional online publication in northern Portugal that officially ceased operations in 2023.

Russian intelligence services had used the platform’s name to spread pro-Moscow narratives across Portuguese-speaking countries, including Brazil.

“Another Russian propaganda source in Europe has been shut down following an investigation and appeals to the relevant authorities,” Sadokha said.

The UUP head expressed gratitude to “our Portuguese friends – journalists who conducted a thorough investigation into the fake pro-Russian site, which had been spreading Russian disinformation in Portuguese for the past two months.”

“Special thanks to our colleague Igor Veloso and the Head of the UUP branch in Agêda, Nadiia Umanska, for their significant contributions in fighting Russian propaganda!” Sadokha said.
