Ukrainians in Denmark rally for the release of Ukrainian POWs

Ukrainians in Denmark took to the streets in two cities on 13 April to demand the release of Ukrainian prisoners of war who are held captive in Russia under harsh, tortuous conditions.

Demonstrations were held in Copenhagen, the capital, and Aarhus, according to the Association of Ukrainians in Denmark (AUD).

The rallies were part of the international “Voices of Captives” initiative, a global marathon that unites people around the world in support of Ukrainian defenders held in Russian captivity, those missing in action, as well as their families.

The Copenhagen event was organized by Heart in Action, Voices of Captives, and Ukrainian Dialogues. In Aarhus, the rally was led by the Aarhus branch of the Lastivka Ukrainian organization in Denmark, together with local partners.

Participants in Copenhagen gathered near the Anchor of Memory (Mindeankeret) memorial, speaking on behalf of those who have been held in captivity for three years – enduring isolation, uncertainty, and inhumane conditions.

Meanwhile, in Aarhus, a peaceful march united participants around a shared mission: to raise their voices, show support, and remind the world of those still in captivity. The streets were filled with messages of solidarity, banners, Ukrainian flags, and symbols of hope and resilience.

It was a day of solidarity and shared humanity. Every presence made a difference. Every voice mattered. Together we are strong. Together – we do not forget,” the AUD said.

As of April 2025, the exact number of POWs held in Russian captivity remains uncertain due to limited access and inconsistent reporting. However, estimates suggest that tens of thousands of Ukrainian citizens, both military and civilian, are detained by Russian authorities.
