Ukrainians in Africa to celebrate the Nuclear Deal Court Case Anniversary, draw attention to occupied ZNPP

On April 26, the Ukrainian Association of South Africa invites everyone to join the celebration of the 6th anniversary of the court annulment of the agreements with the Russian company Rosatom on the construction of nuclear reactors in South Africa. The event will be an opportunity to honor the memory of those who died in the 1986 Chornobyl disaster and to remind the world of the Zaporizhzhya NPP still seized by the Russians.

South Africa and Russia signed an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) in 2014. The agreement provided a favorable tax regime for Russia and imposed significant financial obligations on South Africa. As it turned out in court, it set the parties on the path to a binding exclusive agreement on purchasing new reactor units from the Russians. Among the opponents of the deal were the Southern African Faith Communities Environment Institute (SAFCEI) and Earthlife Africa-Johannesburg, which jointly filed a lawsuit to stop the nuclear deal.

“We will be celebrating six years since SAFCEI and Earthlife Africa Johannesburg blocked the government’s secret trillion-rand nuclear deal, remembering the Chernobyl disaster, and raising the alarm about the unacceptable weaponization of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine,” the organizers explain on their Facebook page.

According to the organizers, the event will take place in a hybrid format, consisting of an online meeting and a peaceful march to the South African Parliament.

Registration for the event in Zoom is here.
