On 6 May 2015 Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) President Eugene Czolij urged UN Secretary-General Ban Ki‑moon to not participate in the Victory Day commemorations on 9 May 2015 in the Russian Federation.

Drawing on the lessons of history, the UWC President emphasized the need for the international community to focus on the very real threat of a new global conflict stemming from the aggression by the Russian Federation in Ukraine, overwhelmingly condemned as a violation of international law and agreements.

Reflection on World War II cannot disregard the fact that its roots are to be found in the malicious will of two dictators – Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin – who had grand visions of controlling the world with no regard for the aspirations of any other state or people, ruthlessly redrawing borders and reshaping human fates.

Today, the same genus of aggression that instigated World War II aspires to change borders and establish zones of domination and hegemony.

“At this critical time, we urge the UN Secretary-General to demonstrate solidarity with the Ukrainian people who are defending the independence and sovereignty of their country and the ideals and values of the civilized world that underpin the United Nations, and not participate in the Victory Day commemorations on 9 May 2015 in the Russian Federation,” stated UWC President Eugene Czolij.
