Ukrainian World Congress urges international community
to facilitate the release of Ukrainian pilot Nadiya Savchenko
The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) urges the international community to facilitate the release of Ukrainian Air Force pilot Nadiya Savchenko who was kidnapped by Russia-backed terrorists and remains detained in the Russian Federation in violation of international law.
Nadiya Savchenko was captured on 18 June 2014 by Russia-backed terrorists in Eastern Ukraine when she went to take her wounded colleagues from the battlefield.
The whereabouts of Nadiya Savchenko were unknown until the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation confirmed that she had been detained in a pre-trial detention center in Voronezh, Russia. Incredibly, this committee claimed that officer Nadiya Savchenko was detained after coming to Russia, without documents, in the guise of a refugee.
On 25 July 2014 the Voronezh Court of Appeals denied her release ordering that she remain imprisoned in Russia.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, in its latest report on Ukraine released on 28 July 2014, noted an alarming number of abductions and detentions in Eastern Ukraine. Since mid‑April 2014, 717 people have been abducted in that region by Russia-backed terrorists.
“The Ukrainian World Congress calls for the international community to facilitate the release of Ukrainian pilot Nadiya Savchenko and all the victims abducted by Russia-backed terrorists in Eastern Ukraine,” stated UWC President Eugene Czolij.
