On 29-30 April and 1 May 2017 Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) President Eugene Czolij fulfilled a visit to Poland with his wife Anna Czolij to participate in the commemorations of the 70th anniversary of Akcija “Wisla”.

The UWC President began his visit on 29 April 2017 in Pavlokoma where he attended a memorial service for the 366 people who were killed in that village in early 1945 by the Polish military.

On 30 April 2017 Eugene Czolij attended Divine Liturgy celebrated in memory of the victims of Akcija “Wisla” at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Greek Catholic Cathedral in Przemysl.

Later that day at the Narodnyi Dim in Przemysl the UWC President addressed the III Congress of the Union of Ukrainians in Poland in remembrance of the victims of Akcija “Wisla” during which over 140,000 Ukrainians were forcibly resettled and scattered across the north-western territories of Poland to enable the Polish communist authorities to coercively polonize them.

During the visit Eugene Czolij had meetings with Archbishop Eugeniusz Popowicz, Metropolitan of the Przemysl-Warsaw Archeparchy of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, Archbishop Emeritus Jan (Martyniak) of the Przemysl-Warsaw Archeparchy of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, Deputy Chair of the Senate of Poland Bogdan Borusewicz and Member of the Polish Sejm Jacek Protasiewicz to discuss ways of strengthening Ukrainian-Polish relations.

“The Ukrainian World Congress calls upon the governing authorities of Poland to take clear and unequivocal steps to acknowledge the victims of Akcija “Wisla” and thereby to ensure that similar tragedies are never repeated,” stated UWC President Eugene Czolij.
