The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) congratulates jazz artist Jamala, Ukraine’s representative in the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest, for her politically and culturally significant victory on 14 May 2016.

The Crimean Tatar singer performed 1944 – a song she wrote about the deportation of the Crimean Tatars from the Crimean Peninsula by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.

The victory underscores the support of the global community for the territorial integrity of Ukraine, and reaffirms that Crimea is Ukraine.

“The Ukrainian World Congress highlights the importance of this win at a time when Crimean Tatars and Ukrainians are once again being persecuted on the illegally occupied by Russia Crimean Peninsula and denied their fundamental rights and freedoms,” commented UWC President Eugene Czolij.
