Starting from November 26, Ukrainians all over the world started an annual commemoration of the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor. On this day, the UWC called on all Ukrainians and friends of Ukraine to light a candle in their windows in memory of the victims of the Holodomor genocide of 1932-1933, as well as to take an active part in commemorative events in communities worldwide.
The premiere of the mini-film Names on the Wall, dedicated to the memory of the generations and peoples lost by the Russian occupiers, took place on the UWC Facebook page. Russia has not stopped trying to exterminate Ukrainians.
Canada
Yesterday, the Ukrainian community and friends of Ukraine in Toronto joined the whole world in honoring the memory of the victims of the Holodomor genocide of 1932-1933. Representatives of the Ukrainian World Congress, led by President Paul Grod, attended the event.
Germany
For the first time in the history of Hamburg, the victims of the Holodomor in Ukraine were honored in the city’s central church. The activists of the Ukrainian community read the testimonies of survivors of the tragedy. Only facts about the genocide of the Ukrainian people during the times of the Holodomor, such as excerpts from renowned historians’ research, construed the speeches at the event.
Poland
In Krakow, a liturgy and a memorial service for the victims of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 and mass artificial famines of 1921-1923 and 1946-1947 in Ukraine were held in the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross of the UGCC. After the service, the Ukrainian community of Krakow, refugees from Ukraine, together with the employees of the General Consulate of Ukraine in Krakow, honored the memory of the victims of the genocide of the Ukrainian people by laying flowers together, lighting candles near the memorial sign to the victims of the Holodomor in Ukraine, and singing the National Anthem of Ukraine.
Romania
The Union of the Ukrainians in Romania paid tribute to the innocent lives of millions of Ukrainians – victims of one of the most tragic periods in the history of the Ukrainian nation. All UUR branches, in cooperation with local self-government bodies, organized commemorative events on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the great tragedy of Ukrainians, caused by the confiscation of all stocks of grain and basic food products.
France
In memory of the victims of the Stalinist regime, a march was held in Paris for France’s recognition of the Holodomor as genocide. Together with the Ukrainian community, there were representatives of many public organizations and deputies of the French Republic. “Today’s war and Russian terrorism are nothing but the consequences of the genocide of 1932-33. The goal of the Kremlin has always been the extermination of Ukrainians,” the organizers of the action emphasize.
Hungary
According to tradition, together with the Parish of the Most Holy Theotokos in Budapest and the Embassy of Ukraine in Hungary, a joint candle was lit in memory of the victims of the Holodomor in Ukraine in 1932-1933 in the Church of St. Michael, where the Divine Service was held with the participation of the Novus choir.
Estonia
As part of the commemoration of the 90th anniversary of the beginning of the Holodomor of 1932-1933, a book presentation was held in Ukraine, which contains translations of the article “Soviet Genocide in Ukraine” in 33 languages. The book was published by the Holodomor Museum in Kyiv in cooperation with Ukrainian organizations of the world, in particular the Congress of Ukrainians of Estonia. Ambassadors of many countries and representatives of the Ukrainian community took part in the presentation, organized by the Congress and the Embassy of Ukraine in Tallinn.
Portugal
A commemoration of Holodomor victims took place in Lisbon. Ukrainian churches with Ukrainian diplomats and the community as a whole throughout Portugal have held such actions every year since 2007. Through joint efforts in 2017, it was possible to achieve the recognition of the Holodomor as genocide by the Portuguese Parliament. Today, Ukrainians in Portugal once again appealed to the Portuguese Parliament to recognize the new genocide, which is planned and implemented from the same center – Moscow. “Unfortunately, at the cost of Ukrainian lives, the thesis that unpunished evil repeats itself is once again confirmed?” – noted the head of the Union of Ukrainians in Portugal, Pavlo Sadokha.
Czech Republic
The Ukrainians of the Czech Republic organized a ceremony in Prague to honor the memory of the victims of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine, at which the temporary charge d’affaires of Ukraine in the Czech Republic, Vitaly Usatiy, spoke. The diplomat thanked the Czech people for their constant strong support, solidarity, and help in bringing Ukraine closer to victory. Those present got acquainted with the exhibition about the causes, course, and consequences of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 and lit a memorial candle for all Ukrainians who died of hunger.
Moldova
The Ukrainian community of Moldova, together with employees of the Ukrainian embassy, volunteers, and caring local residents, joined the international campaign “Light a candle of memory” to honor the memory of millions of innocent victims of the genocide of the Ukrainian people. This year, the campaign is held under the slogan “We remember. We unite. We will win.” A memorial service was held for the victims of the Holodomor in Ukraine. Those present honored their memory with a moment of silence and lit candles.
Denmark
The Association of Ukrainians in Denmark organized a march to the parliament to recognize Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism.
Brazil
On November 26, the choir of the folk group “Barvinok” of the Society of Ukrainians of Brazil and the women’s ensemble held a concert in memory of the victims of the Holodomor in the Regina Casilo Auditorium, Curitiba.
