The Ukrainian Community of Lebanon has joined the ranks as a full-fledged member of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) having attained the status of a Ukrainian regional organization on Oct. 17 upon approval by the international organization’s board of directors.
Founded in 2016 and officially registered in December the following year, the Ukrainian Community of Lebanon first became an associated member of the UWC in October 2023.
“Since its establishment, the community has created the singing groups Onuky and Palianytsia, a dance ensemble called Vesna, and a [weekly] Saturday Ukrainian [language] school in Lebanon named after Ahatanhel Krymsky, serving children from both Lebanon and Syria,” said Iryna Vysota-Zharamani, the organization’s head.
The community has also launched projects to translate Ukrainian books into Arabic, including an Ukrainian-Arabic Dictionary, as well as poetic works by Ivan Franko and Lesia Ukrainka and historical writings by Ahatanhel Krymsky.
In addition, the community stages a variety of cultural events, celebrates significant dates, and hosts exhibitions, concerts, festivals, and workshops. Since the outbreak of war in 2014, its members have tirelessly supported Ukrainian soldiers by fundraising for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, orphanages, and civilians.
Following Russia’s full-scale invasion, the community has held numerous protests outside the Russian embassy and in the main square of Beirut. The organization remains committed to uniting Ukrainians in Lebanon and preserving Ukrainian language, culture, history, and traditions.
