Ukrainian children face long-term traumatic consequences due to Russia’s war against Ukraine, research finds

The full-scale Russian invasion has caused and continues to have devastating effects on an entire Ukrainian generation, particularly children. The extensive war has impacted every aspect of minors’ lives in Ukraine, according to research by Sofia Polishchuk, the Children of Ukraine Foundation director.

The analytical work was carried out under the Temerty Contemporary Ukraine Program at the Ukrainian Research Institute of Harvard University. From October 2022 to September 2023, nearly 50 respondents were surveyed. The study details the experiences of 63 Ukrainian children forcibly displaced abroad after February 24, 2022.

The Russian Federation’s war in Ukraine has created the largest displacement crisis in Europe since World War II, forcing over 14 million Ukrainians to flee their homes. As Russian Armed Forces carry out brutal campaigns against civilians, children suffer the consequences,” the study begins.

The study analyzed five periods in each child’s life: life before February 24, 2022; the journey to the host community; adaptation to the host community; dealing with physical or psychological trauma; and future prospects.

The findings illustrate a heartbreaking picture of loss, endurance, adaption, and hope. Children will likely experience long-term consequences from the Russian Federation’s volitional war in Ukraine. National governments can help alleviate suffering and ensure that future generations do not face a similar war-torn fate by assisting Ukrainian displaced families and supporting Ukraine’s victory,” the author writes.
