Ukrainian Canadian Congress says report on Russia’s meddling in Canada’s democracy falls short of tackling problem

A government report on Russia tampering with Canada’s democracy doesn’t sufficiently address the threat that Moscow’s poses, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) stated in response to the Foreign Interference Commission’s recent findings.

Stronger measures are needed to counter the Kremlin’s threat, the UCC said.

While Commissioner [Marie-Josée] Hogue correctly identifies Russia as one of the countries threatening Canadian democracy, among her 51 recommendations, there are none that, if implemented, would adequately address this threat,” said Ihor Michalchyshyn, CEO and Executive Director of the UCC.

The UCC expressed dissatisfaction with the commission’s findings.

Nothing in Justice Hogue’s Report will give Russia any pause to cease any of its threatening activities,” the statement says. “This is disappointing.”

The UCC emphasized the seriousness of its participation in the Foreign Interference Commission’s work.

We communicated forcefully to the Commission the serious threat our community, and Canadian society as a whole, faces from Russia’s campaign to undermine our democracy,” the statement said.

The report, released on Jan. 28, concluded that multiple countries – including India, Russia, and China – interfered in Canada’s democratic processes in an effort to destabilize the country.
