Ukrainian-Brazilian Central Representation marks 40th anniversary, elects new leadership

Brazil’s central body for organizations that represent the interests of Ukrainians in Brazil, the Ukrainian-Brazilian Central Representation (UBCR), ushered in new leadership at the XI Congress of Ukrainian Organizations on March 22-23 in Curitiba, Parana.

The event in southern Brazil was dedicated to the 40th anniversary of UBCR’s founding.

UBCR, which promotes cultural, social, and political ties between Ukraine and Brazil, was established in the 1980s to address the need for a unified body that would represent the entire community before the Brazilian government and in the international Ukrainian community.

Vitório Sorotiuk has led the organization for over half its history.

Ukrainian World Congress President Paul Grod, who joined the Congress remotely, awarded Sorotiuk with the highest UWC distinction – the St. Volodymyr the Great Medal.

“Vitório [Sorotiuk] is not only an excellent leader of your community but also an active Vice President of the UWC. His leadership and tireless work help consolidate Ukrainians worldwide, support Ukraine in times of trial, and strengthen the position of the Ukrainian community globally,” Grod said.

The XI Congress participants outlined the strategic directions for the UBCR’s activities and elected a new leadership, with Roberto André Oresten becoming the organization’s president.

Oresten’s leadership team will include: Jorge Rybka, Oksana Javidzak, Julia Regina, Bordun Bertoldi, Giovana Chokailo, Lucia Oszust, Sônia Arendarchuk, Ana Kovaliuk, Oleksandra Hrystsyna, Vera Piaceski, and Sérgio Maciura.

As Ukraine faces unprecedented challenges, it is crucial for Ukrainians in Brazil to actively advocate for its interests. Unfortunately, Grod noted, Brazil has yet to provide sufficient support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression.

“Your voice is extremely important to ensure that the truth about events in Ukraine is heard louder. I sincerely wish you all inspiration and strength,” Grod said. “May the Ukrainian community in Brazil continue to thrive and prosper. Glory to the Ukrainians of Brazil, glory to Ukraine. Glory to the heroes!”
