Ukraine evacuates 138 civilians from Sudan

Ukrainian Defense Ministry’s Intelligence Directorate has reported a successful rescue operation to evacuate expat civilians from the war-torn Khartoum, the capital of Sudan.

A total of 138 Ukrainian, Georgian and Peruvian citizens, including 35 women and 12 children, were evacuated in the operation carried out in coordination with the Office of the President and Foreign Ministry of Ukraine in the conditions of incessant fighting and scarce food, water and equipment.

The 87 Ukrainians in the rescued group are mostly pilots, aviation technicians, and their families.

All the evacuees are now safe in Egypt. The citizens of Ukraine are provided with visa and documentary support and are looking forward to soon returning to their Motherland.

On April 15, the first day of the coup d’etat in Sudan, a Boeing 737 operated by a Ukrainian airline caught fire in Khartoum Airport, Radio Svoboda reported.

Russia’s Wagner mercenary force is accused of having various commercial and military ties to Sudan, according to BBC, and its operations in the country have been targeted by both U.S. and EU sanctions.

Four days ago, Sudanese and regional diplomatic sources told CNN the Wagner group has been supplying Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces with missiles to aid their fight against the country’s army.
