Ukraine cripples Russian energy facilities as potential negotiations loom

Ukraine is focused on extensively targeting Russia’s main cash cow of oil refineries to sap its economy, writes the German publication WELT

In January alone, Ukrainian drones struck more than a dozen such Russian facilities that also supply crucial fuel to military jets and equipment.

Drones target Russian oil sites almost on a daily basis. For instance, explosions were reported in the Krasnodar region overnight on Feb. 5.

The increasing frequency and effectiveness of these drone attacks result from rapid technological advancements in the Ukrainian military. Since 2024, at least 80 Russian oil industry sites have been hit.

Ukrainian drones are continuously improving, with their range now exceeding 1,500 kilometers (932 miles), enabling highly accurate strikes on critical targets.

Refineries in southern Russia have been particularly vulnerable.

About 20 percent of all attacks have targeted the Krasnodar region, with other strikes affecting the Rostov, Belgorod, Oryol, and Volgograd regions. At least 64 of these strikes have caused fires.

The Russian military heavily relies on its oil and gas industry since it’s the main foundation of its economy.

Over the past 20 years, Moscow has invested heavily in expanding its refineries to not only export crude oil but also refine products into gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. This sector is a crucial pillar of its economy, comprising about 20-25 percent of Russia’s yearly economic output and provides about 35-45 percent of revenue to state coffers.

Recognizing the strategic significance of Russia’s oil refining infrastructure, Ukraine has made it one of its key targets, according to WELT.
