The Illinois division of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA) celebrated its 50th anniversary on Jan. 26 with high-caliber speakers in attendance as the advocacy umbrella group observed Ukraine’s Unity Day the same day.
“Looking ahead to a new chapter and even more advocacy work for Ukraine in the next fifty years,” the organization said.
The event in Chicago brought together politicians, including local congressmen, diplomats, activists, and Ukrainian defenders.
Among those attending were Dr. Mariya Dmytriv-Kapeniak, president of the UCCA Illinois Division; Representatives Mike Quigley and Danny Davis; representatives of the Ukrainian community in Chicago and Illinois, U.S. federal and local officials, and the consular corps of Chicago, including Ukraine’s Consul General, Serhiy Koledov, as well as consuls from other countries.
Also present were members of the Syrian and Taiwanese communities, Ukrainian defenders, and soldiers of the Ukrainian Armed Forces who are receiving treatment in the U.S. after being wounded. Guests traveled from New York, Wisconsin, and Michigan, and Roman Hirniak, president of the Ukrainian National Association, represented New Jersey.
“The event included the presentation of honorary awards to outstanding community leaders and organizations,” the UCCA reported.
Additionally, the UCCA Illinois Division highlighted that celebrating Unity Day in Chicago serves as a reminder to the world, especially U.S. congressmen, not only about the symbolic significance of Ukraine’s historical unity but also as a beacon for the future.
“Ukraine’s territorial unity is crucial for victory in the war against Russia,” the UCCA said.
The event’s main speakers were Ukrainian member of parliament Oleksandra Ustynova and William Taylor, former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine (2006-2009) and current vice president of the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington.
The Ukrainian World Congress extends its heartfelt congratulations on this golden anniversary and thanks the Illinois UCCA branch for its years of dedication to supporting Ukraine.
