Ukrainians in Brazil have welcomed an initiative that China and Brazil are promoting to include more countries, as well as the United Nations, in negotiations to end Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, said Roberto André Oresten, the newly elected President of the Ukrainian-Brazilian Central Representation (UBCR).
“This is not just a European issue – it impacts global security. Moving this matter to the UN is a positive step, as the organization has already condemned Russia’s aggression and supports respect for Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders” Oresten said.
However, UBCR noted that the veto power that major states enjoy in the UN should be rescinded in order to achieve global solutions and establish a lasting peace in the Russo-Ukrainian war.
Currently, the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the U.S., the UK, France, China, and Russia – hold veto power, allowing them to block any resolution, even if it has majority support.
Russia frequently uses this power to block initiatives condemning its aggression or strengthening support for Ukraine.
On March 20, following a meeting of the Friends of Peace for Ukraine group at the UN, Brazil and China criticized US President Donald Trump’s actions regarding ceasefire mediation in Ukraine.
In an official statement, the ambassadors of China and Brazil emphasized the need for broader international participation in the negotiations and stressed that the UN must play a key role in resolving the conflict and implementing a peace agreement.
