Türkiye is curtailing its dependence on Russia in energy, nuclear power, and tourism while solidifying its role in the Black Sea region, political scientist Oleksii Buriachenko said on Ukraine’s Channel 24.
“It’s crucial for Türkiye to limit Russia’s influence in the Black Sea. This is clear given its strategic ties with the U.S. on one side and China’s growing presence on the other,” Buriachenko said.
As a NATO member, Ankara has access to European markets, making it a logical step to decrease reliance on Russia.
“Türkiye could become one of the countries that, in exchange for cooperation in the Black Sea, will continue supporting Ukraine even after the war’s active phase ends,” he said.
The Ukrainian analyst suggested that Türkiye might contribute to peacekeeping missions in Ukraine to ensure stability along the front lines.
Additionally, Ankara could join Britain in overseeing security in the Black Sea and potentially play a role in Crimea’s liberation.
“This is also a serious security concern for Turkey,” the analyst said.
Ultimately, Türkiye is positioning itself as a key player in the dialogue between the U.S., Europe, and Ukraine while advocating for the interests of the Global South, Buriachenko said.
