Trump prolongs sanctions against Russia for another year

U.S. President Donald Trump has extended sanctions against Russia for another year in response to its full-scale aggression in Ukraine. The decision, made on Feb. 28, continues a series of restrictive measures that were first introduced in 2014 following Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea.

The sanctions remain in place under the state of emergency declared by the U.S. in March 2014 during Russia’s initial invasion of Ukraine.

Imposed by then-President Barack Obama, this state of emergency has been extended multiple times since.

The sanctions freeze the assets of individuals involved in Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, including those who supported Crimea’s annexation. The state of emergency has been prolonged by successive presidents.

Trump’s executive order confirms that the actions and policies outlined in these sanctions continue to pose an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to U.S. national security and foreign policy.

It will remain in effect at least until March 6, 2026.

While the order doesn’t specify the exact sanctions being extended, it reaffirms that the sanctions imposed in 2014, 2018, and 2022 will continue, with further measures against Russian individuals and entities backing Russia’s aggressive policies.

Trump and his team have previously stated that sanctions could be lifted only after a peace agreement is signed and conditions ensuring stability and security in Ukraine are met.
