Three European nations may deploy troops to Ukraine if ceasefire holds

Germany could deploy its military to Ukraine, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said during a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels, Spiegel magazine reports.

Baerbock noted that foreign peacekeeping forces could help enforce a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, providing Ukraine with additional security alongside NATO membership.

“Anything that promotes lasting peace will, of course, have Germany’s full support,” Baerbock said, adding that the deployment of German troops would only be possible after a ceasefire is established.

France and Britain are also considering the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine to ensure security during potential peace negotiations with Russia, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported, citing a senior NATO official.

These discussions, however, are happening at the national level in Paris and London, not within NATO. Both countries are preparing various scenarios to offer ready solutions should the new U.S. administration request greater European involvement in supporting Ukraine.

Paris-based newspaper Le Monde least month reported that European nations had revived discussions about deploying foreign troops and private defense companies to Ukraine. These talks resurfaced following Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election.

At the same time, the Ukrainian World Congress and leading French civil society figures have urged President Emmanuel Macron to send foreign military instructors to Ukraine. A letter with this appeal has been sent to Macron’s administration and published in Le Monde.
