The West lacks a strategy for Ukrainian victory, argues Historian Hrytsak

The West has no strategy for defeating Russia and the “neither a Russian victory nor a Ukrainian defeat” approach may end up with Ukraine’s loss and destruction, warned the renowned Ukrainian historian Yaroslav Hrytsak in an interview with Ukrainska Pravda

“You know, this is the phrase Winston Churchill used after Japan attacked America following Pearl Harbor: ‘Give us the tools, and we will finish the job.’ This is the phrase Ukraine wants to say right now,” Hrytsak noted.

Ukraine’s operation in Kursk took the West by surprise and demonstrated that Putin’s “red lines” can be easily moved. However, Hrytsak currently does not see a leader in the West capable of a decisive decision in support of Ukraine to victory.

The historian also shared his concerns that Ukraine may be pressured into negotiations on unfavorable terms. “If the situation develops as it is now, with these trends continuing — primarily that Ukraine is allowed neither to lose nor to win, and with limited arms supplies, particularly restrictions on the most effective weapons — we may be forced (and there are already talks about this) into peace or a truce,” he said.

If Ukraine is forced into a “very painful compromise,” it could lead to internal conflicts in the country. “This will be a situation of intense civil conflict, which, under certain conditions, could even lead to civil war. I do not rule this out; it needs to be discussed. We must consider the worst-case scenarios to consciously avoid them,” the historian advised.
