The fight continues: Remembering the Heavenly Hundred and supporting Ukraine

Today marks the 11th anniversary of a pivotal moment in Ukraine’s modern history, as the world remembers the brave individuals who sacrificed their lives during the 2014 Revolution of Dignity. Known as the “Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred,” these courageous men and women stood up for a free, democratic, and European-oriented Ukraine.

The Revolution of Dignity began as peaceful protests against then-President Viktor Yanukovych’s decision to abandon closer ties with the European Union. It escalated when government forces violently cracked down on demonstrators, resulting in over a hundred civilian deaths in Kyiv from Feb. 18-20, 2014. The youngest hero, Nazariy Voitovych, was only 17 years old, while the oldest, Ivan Nakonechnyi, was 82, demonstrating the diverse range of Ukrainians who united in this struggle.

This tragic event marked a turning point in Ukraine’s trajectory, leading to Yanukovych’s flight to Russia. In the aftermath, Moscow seized the opportunity to launch a military invasion, occupying Crimea and invading eastern Ukrainian regions. The conflict culminated in Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022.

As Ukraine continues to defend its sovereignty and democratic values, the UWC calls on the international community to:

  1. Support Ukraine in securing a just and lasting peace
  2. Provide strong security guarantees
  3. Avoid making agreements with Russia without Ukraine’s involvement
  4. Remain vigilant against Russian disinformation campaigns

The sacrifice of the Heavenly Hundred serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle against Russian aggression and the importance of upholding democratic principles worldwide. Their heroism has become a symbol of Ukraine’s unwavering commitment to freedom, dignity, and a European future.
