The Russians fabricated a version about a deliberate attack by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the prisoner-of-war camp in Olenivka. Such conclusions were made after a detailed analysis of information about the terrorist attack, Volker Türk, UN Human Rights Chief, said.
“While the precise circumstances of the incident on the night of 28-29 July 2022 remain unclear, the information available and our analysis enable the Office to conclude that it was not caused by a HIMARS rocket,” the statement reads.
The UN spoke with relatives of prisoners of war and those who survived the terrorist attack. Specialists could not establish the specific source of the explosion, the exact direction, or the weapon used to carry out the attack.
“The Office will continue to follow up on the incident consistent with its expertise and mandate,” the UN said.
Last year, on July 29, Russian troops reported an explosion in the Olenivka colony in the Russian-occupied territory of Donetsk Oblast. At least 50 Ukrainian prisoners of war were killed then. The exact number of victims is unknown. Until now, the Russians blamed Ukraine and claimed that a missile from the American HIMARS system allegedly caused the explosion. At the same time, Russia organized the mass murder of Ukrainian prisoners to blame and discredit the Ukrainian forces, the Ukrainian authorities say.
