A former member of the Riksdag – the parliament of Sweden – has come to Ukraine to fight as a member of its Armed Forces.
A year ago, 42-year-old Caroline Nordengrip wore an expensive suit to work in the Swedish parliament and earned €7,000 a month. Today, Sgt. Nordengrip is wearing camouflage to defend Ukraine and the civilized world from Russian terrorism.
Caroline enlisted in the 47th Brigade, which traditionally terrifies the Russian occupiers.
“For me, it all started back in the Riksdag, at a meeting, literally on the 2nd day after the start of the full-scale war. Your ambassador was in Sweden, and he told us about the situation in Ukraine. And I remember so well the moment when I looked down, looked at my expensive suit and thought: ‘What am I doing here?’’ the newly minted defender of Ukraine says in an interview with Radio Liberty.
In an interview with Borås Tidning, Caroline said she decided to contribute to Ukraine’s victory in this way.
“It was obvious to me. I never hesitated. I learned so much about this war when I was a defense committee member that when it started, I immediately felt that I had to contribute,” said the sergeant of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Caroline Nordengrip is a native of Bollebygd, a small town near Gothenburg. She is a member of the Sweden Democrats party and served as the party’s national ombudsman.
In March 2022, she came to Ukraine and stayed in the war-torn country, including the Kyiv region, for six weeks. She had to return home because of her work at Riksdag but says thoughts of serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine never left her.
The global Ukrainian community thanks Caroline Nordengrip and all fighters who come from different countries and join the Ukrainian warriors of light in their fight against the Russian invasion. Your courage and commitment to the ideals of freedom are truly inspiring.
