Germany’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier had to spend an hour in a bomb shelter during his visit to Ukraine on Tuesday, UNIAN reports.
Steinmeier just arrived in Koryukivka, Chernihiv Oblast, and was speaking with Koryukivka Mayor Ratan Akhmedov when the air alert signal went off. Keeping the German president company in the shelter were the mayor, the head of the Chernihiv Oblast Military Administration Vyacheslav Chaus, and local people.
“We spent more than an hour in the shelter and continued speaking for some time even after the white alert. The president of Germany was interested in hearing the stories of the locals about how they survived the occupation, how they stopped the Russian tanks,” Akhmedov told UNIAN.
Steinmeier arrived in Kyiv in the morning by train. His compartment was decorated with a bouquet of irises as a symbol of Ukraine’s gratitude to Germany for the IRIS-T air defense systems, according to Ukrzaliznytsya, the national railroad operator.
