Statement from Ukrainian World Congress President Paul Grod on the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland

Dec. 16, 2024 – On behalf of the Ukrainian World Congress, I would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland for her many years of dedicated service to Canada and unwavering support for Ukraine. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion, Chrystia has been a steadfast ally, leading the global coalition within the G7 to utilize Russia’s frozen assets to support Ukraine. Her innovative approach in developing the Ukrainian sovereignty bonds, guaranteed by Canada, has been instrumental in raising $500 million to aid Ukraine.

Chrystia is an example to many Ukrainians around the world who look to her as a role model of a Ukrainian born in Canada who has always cherished and fostered her Ukrainian heritage. She has taught her children to be proud Ukrainian Canadians while rising to the pinnacles of power in Canada as Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister. I have known and worked with Chrystia for well over a decade. Her integrity and commitment to the people of Canada as a public servant are exemplary, and she is a role model for many.

We also recognize Chrystia for establishing a framework for increased bilateral trade and cooperation with the Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement and for successfully negotiating the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which replaced NAFTA. Her efforts were crucial in preserving and modernizing the trade agreement, ensuring continued economic stability and growth for Canada. Chrystia’s leadership in international diplomacy has not only provided critical financial support but has also strengthened the bonds with Canada’s allies.

As a good friend, I wish you great success in the next chapter of your career as you continue to serve the people of Canada and protect the rules based international order.

Thank you, Chrystia, for your remarkable contributions to Canada and for standing with Ukraine during these challenging times.
