Ukrainian will become an official language of the EU. It will be recognized as a language of international communication and Ukrainian students will gain new opportunities for study, work and promotion abroad, announced Ukraine’s State Language Protection Commissioner Taras Kremin.
The National Commission on the Standards of the State Language has approved the text of the State Language Standard “Ukrainian as a Foreign Language. General Proficiency Levels A1 – C2.” This document is set to become a reliable foundation for those teaching Ukrainian worldwide, publishing textbooks and guides and creating tests for Ukrainian as a foreign language. These texts will enable the development of curricula, as well as organizing schools and courses for everyone interested in learning Ukrainian.
“This decision is a significant step towards establishing and popularizing Ukrainian abroad. I am convinced it will substantially increase the number of people wanting to learn the language of heroes worldwide and will guarantee Ukrainian the status of an official language of the European Union. Now it’s up to the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine to ensure the state registration of the language standard as a normative document,” Kremin said.
The Ukrainian World Congress warmly welcomes the efforts to establish and promote the Ukrainian language and supports all necessary initiatives.
In March 2022, the State Language Protection Commissioner became an associated member of the European Federation of National Institutions for Language.
