The Slovak Parliament recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as a genocide of the Ukrainian people. The decision is fixed in the resolution of the legislative body.
“The famine was committed with the aim of destroying a group of people by deliberately creating conditions that led to the physical destruction [of the people],” the text of the document reads.
Slovak deputies honored the memory of the victims of the Holodomor and also expressed solidarity with the Ukrainian people. The parliament condemned the genocidal acts of the Soviet totalitarian regime, which “led to the death of millions of Ukrainians and significantly damaged the foundations of Ukrainian society.”
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, thanked Slovakia for the decision. “A timely decision, a significant contribution to restoring historical justice and commemorating millions of innocent victims,” the head of state emphasized.
The Ukrainian World Congress expresses gratitude to the Ukrainian community in Slovakia for its consistent public activity and efforts towards recognizing the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as a genocide of Ukrainians.
Earlier, Luxembourg recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as a genocide of the Ukrainian people. Previously, Great Britain and Slovenia enacted similar recognitions.
