Russians destroy Holodomor monuments in south of Ukraine

The Russians are destroying monuments to the victims of the Holodomor in the occupied territories of Ukraine. In particular, in Kherson Oblast, invaders demolished 14 memorial places, local media Raion.Kherson and Most reported.

“The representatives of the aggressor state say that the committed act of vandalism is a fight against the ‘symbol of disinformation,’” the journalists said.

The Russians deny the Holodomor, particularly the Holodomor of 1932-1933. The occupiers say that not Ukraine but other USSR territories were allegedly affected by the mass famine planned by the Soviet dictator Stalin.

The occupiers declared that the process of “purification” of Ukrainian heritage by erasing any references to the Holodomor will continue.

“Since the beginning of the XXI century, the Russian Federation consistently denies the Holodomor as a genocide of the Ukrainian people, starting with the adoption of statements expressing protest against its international recognition as a crime against Ukrainians, and ending with the public burning of the National Book of Memory of Holodomor Victims and the destruction of Holodomor monuments,” the journalists added.

In the last century, Ukrainians survived three Holodomors: 1921-1923, 1932-1933, and the famine of 1946-1947. The mass artificial famine of 1932-1933 became the most severe, leading to millions of victims.

About thirty countries of the world, as well as the European Parliament and PACE, have already recognized the mass famine of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people. The memory of the Holodomor victims is commemorated in Ukraine and the world on the fourth Saturday of November this year, on November 25.

UWC calls on Ukrainian communities to join the global information campaign #Holodomor90 and the online #ShineALight – Light a candle. Take a pledge! campaign. The necessary materials can be found at the link.
