The Russian Federation seeks to restore its influence in Moldova. In particular, Putin wants to use the country in the war against Ukraine. At the same time, the threat exists for the entire European continent, the Minister of Internal Affairs of Moldova, Ana Revenco, said.
“We understand that Russia intends to regain its influence in this region because the geographical position of Moldova is a potentially important bridgehead for the Russian Federation in relation to the EU. Control over Moldova means additional vulnerability for Ukraine,” Revenco said.
Russia’s probable control over Moldova will allow, on the one hand, direct access to the Black Sea, and on the other hand, to control the transportation of goods along the Danube River. This will create “additional opportunities for blackmail and activation of forces in the Transnistrian region,” that is, Russia’s military advantage over Ukraine, Revenco added.
Russia is currently waging a hybrid war in Moldova – it manipulates the population and also spreads fake news. Moldova’s Minister of Internal Affairs noted that the republic’s leadership must handle this.
Earlier, the European Union introduced sanctions against those involved in destabilizing Moldova. The decision was made after a corresponding request from Nicu Popescu, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Moldova.
