Russia sets up military bases on Finnish border

The Russian Federation has begun to equip military bases near the border with Finland, according to the Finnish newspaper Yle, which published  the relevant satellite images. The photos show hangars for maintenance and storage of equipment built on the territory of the Alakurtti garrison and a military warehouse in Petrozavodsk.

For the first time in many years, Russia has begun to invest in military bases near the Finnish border, the article says. At the same time, according to Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkinen, such changes do not threaten the country. The equipment from Petrozavodsk is being transferred to the fronts in Ukraine.

In December 2022, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced Russia’s plans to strengthen its armed forces near the Finnish border. A month ago, he commented to the Russian propaganda agency Interfax on the possible targeting of Russian critical facilities from the territory of Finland.

“It is possible to deploy additional military contingents and NATO strike weapons on Finnish territory, capable of striking critical facilities in northwestern Russia at a considerable depth,” Shoigu said.
