Russia is considering the scenario of a terrorist attack on the Zaporizhzhia NPP with radiation leakage, stated the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, after the intelligence and security service report.
“They have prepared everything for this. Unfortunately, I have repeatedly had to remind that radiation has no state borders. And who it will hit is determined only by the wind direction…” Zelenskyy added.
Ukraine has informed all partners worldwide and provided evidence, the president noted. Zelenskyy once again reminded that the ZNPP is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, which Russia uses as a part of its aggression.
“There should never be any terrorist attacks on nuclear power plants anywhere. This time it should not be like with Kakhovka – the world has been warned, so the world can and must act,” Ukraine’s president concluded.
The day before, the International Atomic Energy Agency stated that the nuclear safety situation at the Zaporizhzhia NPP is “extremely fragile.”
The plant’s dependence on the single operational 750 kilovolts (kV) power line is an additional potential danger to the plant’s security. The IAEA says that this network component supplies the external electricity needed for reactor cooling and other critical nuclear safety functions. Previously, until February 24, there were 4 such lines.
The IAEA is stepping up efforts to guarantee nuclear and physical nuclear security. In addition, the agency said that it is “assisting in the affected region in other ways.”
Earlier, Russians mined the Zaporizhzhia NPP cooling pond, the Chief of the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, Kyrylo Budanov, reported. The IAEA confirms this information.
